Grudge Match: Batman vs Superman

Here is another match that always causes a great deal of controversy: Superman vs Batman. When I was a child, there was no question...not even up for much debate, I just knew Superman would wipe the floor with Batman's carcass. Times have changed. Superman has been powered down significantly. He no longer juggles planets or breathe in space or underwater. He can no longer fly so fast that he can go through time. In short, he's a wuss and Batman has more than a chance. Batman is better trained, smarter, and has the attitude. Not that it would be a cake-walk or an easy victory, but Batman would find a way to win, and without killing anyone! Any thing seems possible after Batman was shown beating up Superman in the comic Dark Knight Returns with Kryptonite brass knuckles. Whew, hardcore. Batman always comes prepared.

I've decided to pit many versions of Batman against Hannibal and Kal Elvis' Superman Remix because there are three versions of Batman I like. Also because of the AI differences, I am also including fight in which I control the character with the weakest AI. Look closely at the Magus Batman under my control fighting Superman, because at one point Magus' Batman throws a Kryptonite batarang at Superman. That was fun.

Mugen: Gladiator

Gladiator is an alien who works the Shiar Empire. He has fought alongside and against the X-men. I admit that he may be dismissed as a knock off Superman with a mohawk, but I still like to read about him, and thankfully there is a version of him for mugen. He has a lot of different abilities. In the comics he is one tough opponent. Fortunately, the mugen version is tough and a lot of fun to play with.

Read the following links for more information about the comics version:
http://www.marvel.com/universe/Gladiator_(Kallark)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gladiator_(Kallark)

Here is a rundown of his powers from Marvel.com

Powers
Gladiator is an alien possessed of numerous abilities, first and foremost being his extraordinary strength. Whilst the uppermost limit of his strength is unknown, Gladiator has proven able to lift over 100 tons in weight. He once lifted the entire 35 floor Baxter Building in New York City, and has boasted of being able to move whole planets. In addition to his strength, Gladiator is virtually invulnerable to the point where he has survived an explosion of nearly nova force completely unharmed. He is, however, vulnerable to certain unspecified wavelengths of radiation.

Gladiator can fly at speeds rivaling those of starships, and can achieve faster-than-light speeds in hyperspace. He can survive unprotected in the vacuum of outer space, being able to go long periods of time without needing to draw breath. Thanks to his incredible lung capacity, Gladiator is also able to draw in large amounts of air and then expel it all to create a gale force wind. Gladiator can also project intense beams of heat from his eyes that can reach temperatures comparable to those produced by stars, as well as microscopic vision that lets him see beyond the sub-atomic barrier.

Much, if not all of Gladiator's abilities are entirely dependent on his level of self-confidence. The more confident he is in being able to complete the task at hand, the more powerful he becomes. Consequently, if Gladiator ever has the slightest hint of doubt that he is unable to accomplish something, then his powers quickly weaken.

The character is fun. You have a lot of powers and makes you feel like you could really take on just about any other character and win. This character does have Amalgram move, but I haven't been able to pull it off, personally yet. Here is the video of the tests I ran:

Creator Interviews: Scruffy Dragon Production’s Buyog

Volzzilla has managed to talk to Buyog who agreed to a short interview. He is a very talented spriter and coder and bears partial responsibility for some of the greatest Mugen characters available! A lot of insight was provided and it is greatly appreciated. Volzzilla's questions are in bold, the answers are un-bolded. Volzzilla wrote it up and passed it to me. My comments in this post are in green. Volzzilla's questions are in black and bolded. Buyog responses are in black and unbolded. Volzzilla has the ability to ask really great questions and I appreciate Buyog's illuminating and candid responses. I thoroughly enjoy playing with any creator Buyog has had a hand in creating. The characters below have been released or are in development. All art in this post is from Buyog's website except the Scruffy Dragon logo (that came ScruffyDragon.com).

1) How did you first learn about MUGEN and how long ago was that?

Well, I actually first got started with the old SFR engine that G.M.Spectre used to use for his M Fighter series of games. From there I found MUGEN, back in 2001 or so I think.

2) When did you decide to get into the character creation side and why? What side of creation do you focus on most?

After only a few weeks of playing with the old DOS MUGEN engine and reading through the docs, I started tinkering with sprite edits and pretty basic character stuff. I even tried making a few characters that never went anywhere (a Super Metroid version of Samus Aran, for one), but I learned a lot in the process. Nowadays, I'm probably mostly a coder, but I like sprite editing too for its Zen.

3) When you are just focusing on having fun and playing, what characters do you tend to use the most and why?

I don't just say this because they're my teammates, but I *love* Wucash and Loganir's stuff. There's just so much packed into one of their creations, and it's all so tightly packaged, they're a ton of fun to play with (and play against, for that matter).

4) What comic character not already made or in the process of being made do you wish was MUGENized?

I can think of several that would be great. The new Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes) would be fun, as would Batman Beyond for much of the same reasons. (editor’s note: This was recently started; Batman Beyond WIP Thread ) On the Marvel side, I'd love to see a Machine Man character done with the Nextwave sensibility. That would be hilarious.

5) Can you please tell me about what current WIP you are most looking forward to other than your own?

Hmm, that's really a tough one. Zvitor's Hawkman looks like it'll be epic, he's really attempting to up his game with that one. Verz's new Captain America (Bucky) is shaping up to be very interesting, too. There are several others I could name, but those two off the top of my head are very promising.

6) How did you get involved with Scruffy Dragon Productions?

Long story. Short version is, I pitched the DC vs. Marvel idea at a few MUGEN boards and got some others interested (Magus and SethZankuten are the earliest partners that are still around). McCready, Loganir, Wucash, Verz and the rest all came along at one point or another as time went on.

7) Please tell the readers about all of your releases. Of those, which one are you most proud of and why?

I still love my first character, Lobo. He's just a blast to play. Almost all of my other works have been collaborations: Ice with Smogon, Marrow with Ryu Win, Guido with McCready, Hal Jordan and Lex Luthor with Enzo (and the SD community at large), Hulk with BobStarsky, Bizarro with Kal-Elvis, Sinestro with Larramones, Elektra with XFields and Daraku. I'm pretty proud of all of my MUGEN "children", although I certainly feel some have been more successful than others. Sprite-wise, I'm pretty proud of the improvements I made to G.M. Spectre's original Ice sprites. Code-wise, I think Lex is some of my best programming work.

8) On your website, you have numerous promising WIP’s that you discuss when you can. Of these, you mention your current 'baby' among those as Parasite? May I ask about any progress you would like to share, and if there are any plans involving him and Scruffyversary?

Like I said on my site, Parasite's become the "purple elephant in the room." For better or worse, I can't talk about my MUGEN work without him coming up eventually. Not that I'm embarrassed about him or anything -- although he's taken a lot longer to advance than any of my others; he's just much harder to get "right." I've felt for a long while now that I shouldn't have publicly announced him at all until he was much further along... but like the DCvsMarvel project itself, the scope of my plans for Parasite keep growing, and that makes it hard to pin down. Currently I'm planning for him to have somewhere between 30 and 50 different power sets when I release him; right now he's got about 50 finished moves (specials and hypers), and most power sets will have 2 moves total, so you can kind of gauge his progress that way I guess.

9) At the Scruffy Dragon Forum, you recently made a comment about "expect an update coming...soonish" regarding Savage Hulk. Any other tidbits you would like to share regarding that?

A lot of the new work for Hulk has been done already, but still some kinks to shake out of his AI. And BobStarsky is still working on a few animations that I'd like to add. Looking at hopefully sometime in March, I think.

10) Again, on your main website, you mention possibly kicking out new beta releases for Sinestro and Elektra, please tell the audience more as I'm sure that would be something highly anticipated.

Well, as I've said on my blog, Sinestro has a few new moves I've put in, but he's still missing a lot of basic stuff, so that one's definitely still in the "maybe" column. With Elektra, though, I've found myself an enthusiastic partner in Daraku, so she's got a lot of new stuff coming down the pipe: more and better intros and winposes, several more finished moves, and the all-important get-hit sprites to make her feel more like a "real" release.

11) Sounds awesome. Please tell the readers more about all the things to expect in this New Elektra beta, starting with the intros and winposes, and then giving as much detail about new moves as you would care to tease the audience about.

All I'll say about intros/outros is to expect to see other characters you may be familiar with. Move-wise, she'll have 3 or possibly 4 specials, and I'm thinking probably 2 hypers (including a revamped version of Curse of the Hand). Plus, as much of the DCvsMarvel goodies (like superjump, hitsparks, push blocking, etc) that I can stuff in before the release.

12) And when can we expect this beta release of her?

My original goal for myself was Valentine's Day, which obviously we've missed already, but she should be ready to go now in the next 2-3 days.

13) Okay, totally anticipating her more now and cannot wait until then! Of your remaining WIPs, Bizarro, Mandarin, and Invisible Woman, who do you see getting the bulk of attention when things slow down for you from the things you are currently focused on?

This will most likely be the Mandarin. Angelic Charon is making a great Invisible Woman, so I'm not as anxious about that my own anymore. And Kal-Elvis is busy with his day job these days, so Bizarro progress is slow. McCready got me off to a great start with Mandarin, sprites and move ideas. And with all of the Iron Man movie buzz the last year or so, including the sequel coming out next year, I feel like there's definite momentum there.

14) Any tips you would like to share that may help other creators, plus what keeps you motivated to continue your work?

For me, it's good to be a bit schizophrenic. That is, I do sprite work, I do code work, all while keeping an eye on forum moderation and team leadership. Plus I maintain a web coding blog and have "real life" pursuits away from the PC too. It keeps me from ever getting bored or burned out on any one project, but the side effect is, of course, that it takes me a lot longer to get anything done. That said, there has been a lot going on in my pipeline these past couple of years, and we're starting to see the payoff from that now. 2009 should be a very fruitful year.

Thank you so much for your time. I know I speak for everyone when I say you gave us a lot of information to crank the anticipation level even higher for everything you are working on. Be sure to check out Buyog's Lair: Buyog2099's MUGEN Creations and Scruffydragon.com Forum the next few days as those will be the first places the new Elektra Beta will be released.

Mugen: Doomsday

Doomsday is a famous character. Anyone that can take down Superman and the Justice League (okay, it was a wussy line up but still a feat), deserves some credit. Superman versus Doomsday is one of the greatest battles ever in comic books. Superman and Doomsday have tangled many times but I can't think of Doomsday outside of the context of his rivalry with Superman. Doomsday is more like a force of nature than a person. He just kills everything. When Doomsday is loose, he must be stopped or everything on the planet would be destroyed. You can read more information about him at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doomsday_(comics)

I have found 4 versions for Doomsday in mugen.

The first two Doomsday characters that I have are not complete so I'm really looking forward to Gyokland's version but it has not been released yet. That being said, I like the two that I have, especially the second one. I admit it seems like a Hulk edit, but I've got to admit it allows you to fight brutally....and yes, there will be blood....lots of it when you use this guy. My favorite move is where Doomsday skewers the other character with the bone protrusions on his fist and then throws them into the air, beat him under ground and then toss them on the ground. An impressive move! I also, think that the move where Doomsday punches the other character and then punches them on the ground. The third Doomsday seems to be the same as the second Doomsday version except that this version is smoother than the second version. It's cleaner, but I think it's much the same thing. I'm not sure it the second and third versions have the same creators so I listed the third version separately in case they are not the same version.

Mugen: Juggernaut

I've always thought that relationships between heroes and villains become extremely complicated when you throw family bonds into it. Few things are sadder than brothers who can't get along even if they are step-brothers. This is the case between Juggernaut and Professor X. For the Juggernaut it is quite personal. He hates Xavier for who he is as a person, not just because of what he is. I don't think Juggernaut hates mutants. He hates Charles Xavier and only wants to humiliate Xavier and crush his dreams. He hates the X-men because he hates what his brother loves and they get in his way in him trying to destroy Xavier. It's ironic that the X-men's two greatest adversaries, Juggernaut and Magneto, are also two men that Xavier will never ever be able to bring himself to destroy. I'd like to know if the X-men were ever destroyed and Xavier dead, would Cain Marko, the Juggernaut, loose the meaning of his existence?

Juggernaut is not a mutant. His powers are mystical. Once he gets moving in a certain direction, almost nothing can stop him. I remember the first time I saw the character. It was in an episode of Spider-man and his Amazing Friends called A Firestar Is Born. I must have been about 5 or 6 years old at the time. My next exposure to the character was the classic Spider-man comic where he tried to protect Madam Web from being kidnapped by the Juggernaut. Spider-man had to stop him by himself. I got it a few months after the initial release.

I think the best version of the characters is the last one in my chart. I don't like the third one because it's just like the MVC version only it speaks profanity when it does special moves (definitely not kid friendly). It plays a lot like the version of Juggernaut form X-men: Children of the Atom except with more moves. He is big and really tough. Many characters don't do much damage with basic attacks. With Juggernaut, you can really be a bully. His win poses, intros, and moves really point to that in the character's personality. Especially the one where he walks over to his defeated opponent, picks them up with one hand and then laughs at them.

Mugen: Iceman

Iceman is one of my favorite characters. He was one of the original X-men. That has got to count for a lot. Unfortunately, I have not always been happy with his portrayal in other media outside of comic books. In the cartoons and movies he never seems to match the personality he has in the comic books. I'd say he is way more than some inexperienced yahoo. I mean he's been around in the public imagination just as long as Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, and Angel. I often wonder why he's not more popular. Thankfully, there are a couple of versions of him in Mugen. You can read more about him at the following links:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceman_(comics)
http://www.marvel.com/universe/Iceman

Here is a rundown on hos powers from Marvel.com
Powers
Iceman is able to lower his external and internal body temperature without harm to himself, thereby radiating intense cold from his body. Iceman is able to reach -105 degrees Fahrenheit within a few seconds, and is immune to sub-zero temperatures around him.

In addition, Iceman can freeze any moisture in the air around him into unusually hard ice, and thereby form simple objects such as slides, ladders, shields, and bats. Iceman can also augment his ice form with extraneous moisture to enhance his strength and durability, and can reshape his body's ice form at will by using any available moisture from his surrounding environment. Similarly, Iceman can rebuild his ice form if any part of it is broken or if it is shattered completely without suffering any permanent damage.

Previously, Iceman was able to transform his body into solid ice and back to human form at will. For a time, however, his body was permanently transformed into solid ice as a result of a secondary mutation. After M-day, Iceman appeared to have lost his powers, returning to human form. However, this was revealed by Emma Frost as a mental block, and Iceman later regained his powers, along with the ability to change from human to ice form.

Iceman also possesses the potential to transport himself quickly over great distances through nearby flows of water by merging his body’s molecules with those of the stream.

By and large both characters are similar to one another, but they are not the same. I enjoy playing with both of them. The difference is that i think the Scruffy Dragon version has a few more moves. For example, the Scruffy Dragon version has a Blizzard move where it seems like he throws black ice at his opponent and really messes them up. The kicker if that the Scruffy Dragon version does include an Amalgram hyper where Aquaman rides in on a wave, merges with Iceman and attacks the opponent with brutal melee attack. I loved it.

Mugen: Fire

Fire is a DC comics character that I don't have much familiarity with. I've read of her in the comic books only one time and that was when she with the Justice League when they tried to take on Doomsday while waiting for Superman to arrive. They had their butts handed to them. However I have also heard that she was also a member of Birds of Prey, a female superhero team. You can read the wikipedia article for more information. I have found only one version of her for mugen, although it looks a little "rough" it's still interesting. It has a variety of special moves and is fun to play. It's formidable enough to allow a player to more than hold his/her own against other well-made characters in mugen.

It's really only quite recently that I have heard of the Red Tornado. I have seen him in Justice League group shots but I have never actually read anything centered on him. He was in a couple of episode of Justice League Unlimited but I don't think he had any lines. I didn't even know that he was an android until I saw his team up episode with Batman in Brave and the Bold. For more information on the character, read the wikipedia article.
