Mugen: Martian Manhunter

When I was growing up, I didn't know much about the Martian Manhunter although he's been around a long time! He has a great many of varied powers. My thoughts about him come from his depictions in animation over the past 9 years in Justice League and The Batman television series and the movie New Frontier. I like this character because although he is an alien from Mars, he profoundly embodies the best of humanity. He constantly puts aside his sadness over being the last of his kind and wants to protect the earth and work alongside his friends in the League. Here is a link for more information:

I have found 2 versions of Martian Manhunter for Mugen.

This character is a lot of fun. I really like the teleport move because you can move around quite quickly and surprise your opponent. And then there is the great power moves the character is capable of doing against your opponent.

Grudge Match: Superman vs Wonder Woman

I believe an all-out battle between Wonder Woman and Superman would be a sight. There was such a fight during the first season of Justice League when they were tricked into fighting one another. Superman figured out the trick and did not manage to get Wonder Woman to figure it out also until she wiped his carcass all over a mall when he stopped fighting her. But what would happen if they both went all out? They have also fought in the comic books, but both characters have changed so much over the years, it is difficult to tell who would win. So because the current version of the comic book matches the mugen versions, I'll call it that way: Superman. I think Superman would win because of his shear power a lone. In strength Wonder Woman almost matches Superman but in speed I don't think can match Superman or the Flash. Therefore I think that would tip the scales towards Superman. In mugen, I pitted Hannibal and Kal Elvis' Superman Remix against Loganir's Wonder Woman Reloaded. Here is the fight:

Personal WIP: Black Panther

Introduction

I've discussed earlier on this blog my desire to create a Black Panther for mugen. Volzzilla has been kind enough to talk to a few mugen creators are willing to help me out. I want to uses this blog as well as the forums for documenting the development of Black Panther. Upon gauging my own capabilities, I have to admit that I am sorely lacking on generating sprites. I have a lot to learn in that area. It would be best if I could find someone to work with. I can work right off the bat when it comes to coding. I have a copy of Fighting Factory and I can use it to make the sprites into a character. I aslo have some ideas.

Motivation:

Black Panther needs to be a mugen character because he is so very cool! I want this character to harken back to the4 way Christopher Priest and Reginald Hudlin wrote the character. He is a king! Very Intelligent. Physically, he's on par with Captain America. I'd like to tie this character to the version that will be in the animated series that was based off of Reginald Hudlin's Black Panther vol 3 #1-6.

Proposed Moves:

Intro - T'challa jumps down from the top of the screen
Stance
Walking
Running
Crouch
Basic punches...weak, normal, strong
Basic kicks...weak, normal, strong
Four Hypers
Helper - Storm
Special block that uses vibranium to block and absorb energy based attacks
Outro - Storm flies down and kisses T'challa
6 pallets (looks)
Blocks -

Methodology:

I'd like to obtain help to get sprites and other ideas for hypers and portraits. I guess what I mean is I need help with art big time! I'll handle the coding and animation. I welcome all comments and opinions. I want this character to be the best possible and above all fun!

Other Versions

I am aware of a couple of WIPS that are now in development. I don't know what the progress is on either of them:

Slotman's version

I have read that Slotman has pulled all the characters that he has released because some one stole his work and claimed it as their own. I think that's awful. I hope he will complete his characters and publicly release them. He does excellent work.

Spider-man - Japanese Style

What if Spider-man was Japanese and not American? Well, there was a television series in the 1970's that answers that question. Spider Powers? check! Webshooters? check! Giant Mech??! Yup.

You know we can't have Japanese fantasy without Mechs or Martial arts. I think it's a cultural thing...and I like it. Marvel.com has announced that every Thursday we can watch an episode!

Mugen: Hulk 2099

I've done a post for Spider-man 2099. Did you know that there was a Hulk 2099? It was not as popular as the Spider-man version, but i did used to collect it. I think the reason why it did not catch on was because it is very different physically from the Hulk we know and love and story-wise added nothing new. Fortunately, the mugen character is a lot more interesting. I like plasying with it. The only thing is, I don't think its as much fun as playing with a version of the regular Hulk. I think I'm biased because the comic book wasn't as much fun as the Spider-man 2099 series. That being admitted, Hulk 2099 is available individually and in Eternity of Heroes (EoH) at Infinity Mugen Team. I can't say for sure if the individual download is the same as the one in EoH, so iif you want to play with the latest, I'd get EoH. I think the character maks great use of his powers. You have the ability to inflict massive damage with gamma spawned strength backed by claws. In Marvel continuity it has been suggested that when people are mutated by gamma ways, hidden and repressed personality traits are released mentally and physically. This is why Bruce Bannar's repressed id and ego are personified in the green and grey Hulks respectively. And why She-Hulk is fun-loving, adventerous, and seductive, while Jennifer Walters was a "plain-Jane" introvert. It may also explain Hulk's 2099 appearance because his alter ego was a cut-throat company executive - hence the claws, fangs, and ugliness - mirroring his soul. Oh well. Mugen: Captain Mar-vell (The Original)

I've recently found out that there exists a version of the original Captain Mar-vell in the Infinity Mugen Team's Eternity of Heroes. He's a hidden character and you have to select him by going to the side of the select screen with all the marvel characters and then hit down then then left. It is another amaaing character. I enjoy the energy based attacks. It is what you wanna use when you want to make sure you really whack your opponent into submission. He looks just like he does in the comics and I can't wait until he is individually released. Here Are some more information on this character:

Mugen: Spider-man (Update)

I have just been alerted to a newer version of Symbiote Spider-man for mugen. This is by far the best version for mugen I have used. I like everything about it. Especially the moves with the symbiote. If you have been looking for a symbiote version of Spider-man, this is the version to get. You will like it. Wondercon 2009 Part 2

I was blessed to attend Wondercon in San Francisco. I had a great a great time! It was really well-organized as fun. I wanted to write a post on this blog and on my main blog. I've decided that the decision about what to post here and what will be placed on the main blog will be defined here. On this blog post I want to focus on some of the formation I gained about the characters.

Much information has been released but I wasn't able to attend everything. I did attend that DC Comics Panel. It wasn't as good as past years panel. The focus was on Superman and Batman. A lot of info was spilled about Superman who's writer, James Robinson, was there. He was cool. He talked about the direction he was taking the book. He said that Kandar, the Kryptonian City (yes, the same city in other continuities that Brainiac had shrunk down and placed in a bottle) has been returned to full size and re-settled on an uninhabited fictional planet orbiting the sun. With over 1000 Kryptonians, all with Superman's powers they can't come to earth and Superman will leave earth and to live with them. To complicate matters Zod is among them. You know the man that hated Jor El, Superman's father, and caused all the ruckus in Superman II. The Panel didn't say anything about Lois Lane and if she leaves with him. He also mentioned that Supergirl has yet again been changed and now more like the Pre-Crisis-of-the-Infinite-Earth's version of the character. She remains on earth but hides her identity. A new Superman limited series will begin detailing Superman's life on New Krypton and the current Superman books will focus on what happens in Metropolis while Superman is away. I'm not sure about this direction. I prefer Superman to be the only humanoid survivor of Krypton. I think it cheapens the character to have so many survivors. But we'll see where this goes. Here is the trailer:

As for Batman: Good news! Bruce Wayne is not dead! I haven't read Final Crisis yet but from what I heard it looks like Batman died saving the DC Universe. But, he is missing and although the writer and editors were present at the panel, they would give up very little information. All they would confirm is that Bruce is missing and Gotham is self-destructing without him leading to battles among Batman's allies, apprentices, and enemies for the mantle. Also by the end of this Summer there will 8 on-going books connected to Batman.

Another major thing that was discussed it the upcoming story line called "Blackest Knight" where previously dead characters return in a kind of green lantern corps but instead of green rings, they're sporting black rings!

I also attended a panel about the Spectacular Spider-man television series. Best thing about it was that they brought clips of season 2 and they announced that the series will be returning to television in the United States airing on Disney XD starting March 23, 2009. They are going to show Season 1 and then Season 2. I want to be clear: it is one of the best Spider-man Animated series ever!

Additionally, there was a panel about the new Black Panther animated series on BET this Summer. I missed it, unfortunately.

I went to a Marvel Panel and that was fun too. I found out that Spider-man is embarking on a major storyline in which he will be arrested. They played the same trailer that has been on their website recently.

Marvel also announced that Dark Reign and Agents of Atlas are going to be very important! In Dark Reign, Norman Osborn is the head of SHIELD but still very evil. Anthony Stark is on the run and he is "lobatomizing" himself to keep secrets out of Osborn's hands, also decreasing his intelligence, and making himself easier to track. I'm not sure If like the way that is going, but the writer of Iron Man, Matt Fraction, was there, and I think the character is in good hand. Agents of Atlas are really good guys trying to take Osborn down from the inside. WE'll see how that goes. They also confirmed that Spider-man will be involved in these events.

As for the goodies I bought, I got a couple Black Panther tradepaperbacks to help in creating a Black Panther character for mugen.

I'm going to cover general implications and thoughts on my other blog in part 1 of this post at What Had Happened Was...

Comics in Crisis: The Real Watchmen

I have come across a get blog article that explains where the Watchmen characters came from. Don't worry, no spoilers! You've got to read this if you want to know some interesting history of comic books.

Comics in Crisis: The Real Watchmen

Mugen: Wolvenom

I'm not sure if you saw the game Spider-man: Web of Shadows from last fall, but in it New york is over-ridden by symbiotes. You remember the "alien" costume that tried to possess Spider-man and then gave rise to Venom, Carnage, and other characters? It turns out that there is a whole planet full of those suckers. In the game, they tried to invade earth, possessing everyone. There was also a comic book limited series in the mid-1990's called Planet of the Symbiotes that ran through all of the Spider-man comics at the time. I can't say for sure I remember a symbiote possessing Wolverine, but from what I understand it is in the plot of the game. I believe that this is what inspired Dark Talbain to make the Wolvenom character. It's fun to play with and one of the tests to make is pitting Wolvenom versus Infinity Mugen Team's Wolverine. I can't use any other version of Wolverine because at this time, Wolvenom is not released as a separate character. You can only use it in the latest build of the Eternity of Heroes game from Infinity Mugen Team.

Post script Addendum:
I've just recently been alerted that Dark Talbain actually had another source of inspiration:

"What inspired me to make him was that one image you have posted on the blog at the top . That is actually some fan art from what I understand . But my look for him is totally based off that . Then I also read the issues of New Avengers where Dr Doom dropped a symbiote bomb & most of the Marvel heroes became symbiotes. In the updated release of Wolvenom , you will see how much those issues had an impact on the character."

I for one can't wait for this update. I missed those issue of New Avengers. I think' I'll have to look it up. Sure wish I could have picked them up at Wondercon. Oh well. This is to, Dark Talbain, I'm sorry about the Sprite confusion, I'll switch it as soon as I can.

By Dark Talbain 9Not Complete9http://www.infinitymugenteam.com/

This character seems nearly complete to me...but only because it is so much fun to play with. It is real deep and is definitely a stand-alone character without loosing any of the fun that comes with playing Wolverine. Adding a symbiote just makes it more fun with being able to shoot web based attacks. I really like the win poses. One of them has Banshee come in and use his sonic scream to drive the symbiote off of Wolverine. One of the things that really impressed me is that when you fight defeat Banshee, his daughter Siryn comes through and uses a sonic scream to drive the symbiote off of Wolverine. That was smart. Wolvenom is a hidden character so you access him by putting select cursor on the random character selector from the Marvel side of the select screen and then you press down and then left. Then you use up and down to scroll through the hidden characters. Here is the video of the test:

WIP Focus: Captain Mar-Vell (original) by Acey and Iron Fist

Acey has given Acey an interview discussing his hidden version of the original Captain Mar-Vell in "Eternity of Heroes" with Volzzilla. Volzilla's questions and comments are in bold and Acey's answers are unbolded. I have a review of the character coming out in a couple of days. In the meantime enjoy the interview. Acey always does quality work and I enjoy all of the characters he has worked on!

1) How did you decide on bringing Captain Mar-Vell to MUGEN? And how was this creation involved with IMT’s Genis-Vell version of Captain Marvel.

Let’s start with his son Genis-Vell, also called Captain Marvel. In late 2006 eSkRo (founder of the Infinity Mugen Team) came to me and asked if I would like to collaborate with him on Captain Marvel. I agreed on the terms that he would do most of the work and I would help along the way. Back then, when other forums heard we were making Captain Marvel, they all mocked us saying it would just be an edit or a rip-off of MICROmor’s Captain Marvel. eSkRo ended up dropping the character when a trusted friend leaked an early beta version. I picked him up from there and Captain Marvel was finished zero hour (literally) for the December 25, 2007 release of infinity’s original Marvel vs. Capcom project.

Immediately we recognized that there would be someone out there who would take our character and edit it into Captain Mar-Vell, the father, so I decided to beat them to it by doing it myself. Throughout 2008, I kept on involving myself with various coding projects so the sprites for this new Captain Mar-Vell were constantly pushed off. Once completed I decided to go one extra step and hand him over to my friend and fellow IMT member, Iron Fist (Mr. 47), to change around the code to make him feel different enough from the other previously released MUGEN character. The end result is what I feel will be an iconic Marvel character to the players.

2) Please tell me your thoughts on the character and his general comic back history.

Two things stand out about Captain Mar-Vell. First, he carries the title of the comic company. In many ways he is Marvel personified, although he doesn’t have the popularity of his contemporaries. In this, although he was a perfect hero, he was contained within a very flawed, vulnerable sidekick. The second item that makes him stand out is that I feel Marvel specifically killed off this character (with an odd space cancer) in order to bring the seriousness of cancer into the minds of the Marvel comic followers. Even one of the most powerful heroes can unexpectedly succumb to this real, common threat.

3) What has already been finished? And what remains to be worked on?

The character is finished. At this point I want to leave him as he is and go back and make additional changes to Genis-Vell. This would include new vocals, different hypers and new intro/win poses. The vocals really need to be changed now, as the current ones came from Marvel Ultimate Alliance and were meant for Captain Mar-Vell.

4) What kind of interaction should we expect with his MUGENized son?

I haven’t really considered this, since Genis-Vell was made in a test tube from his father’s DNA, they never really met or knew each other. I guess it would be something like, “who are you? I can’t put my finger on it but you seem familiar somehow.”

5) Any other planned interactions with other characters, either with intros or exits?

Unfortunately, I’m just not passionate about custom intros or win poses between any two characters, not because I’m against them, but simply do not see them as necessary and choose to focus on other things. There is something with Captain Mar-Vell and Ms. Marvel though, thanks to ZVitor.

6) Since he is finished, when can we expect an individual release?

At a future date still to be determined, IMT will have another release party where he will definitely be able to be individually downloaded. Until then, check him out in Eternity of Heroes.

Summary for Feburary 2009 in Mugen

Volzzilla has compiled a document summarizing the events of February 2009 regarding mugen!!!

February’s Marvel/DC releases and updates

February had two big character releases:

RELEASED -
Rorschach (Watchmen) by SeanAltly

He was highly anticipated before, but with all of the Watchmen
movie buzz kicking in, the wait became epic until finally being released. This
past week kamekaze also updated his AI.

Favorite Fiction: Mugen: Ferro Man

As part of a coverage event, Favorite Fiction went in-depth
on SGM’s Amalgam Project culminating in the release of their first beta, Ferro Man. By clicking the link you will go to the already published review of the
character, which includes video coverage and the blog’s impressions of him.
There is also a link to download him as well.

There were a few updates to characters as well:

Sludge’s Shuma Gorath is already a tough character. Then take into account this most recent update and good luck beating him. Download Shuma Gorath

Symbiote Spider-Man Version 1.1 by Empawk

Empawk has started an update of Symbiote Spiderman and was
kind enough to release the first version of his work. He plans to do more, but
right now you can clearly see some Venom influence.

RedX - eSnips, share anything
Xclusive updated the portraits to Lewis Sawyer’s Red X.

Gambit Updated by M:ken

Numerous changes in game play, but this is just the first
draft. M:ken has more planned on the way, including an AI and various other
adjustments mentioned in the last post in the thread. The thing that stands out
most about him thus far, a brand new hyper that is sure to catch your attention

February’s released stages:

The back half of The Unlimited’s 15 days of Chinese New Year
Event brought a number of stages to the players that should be checked out.
They are:

Rio de Banner

A Good Soldier

Terror At 30,000 ft

Atop The GCPD

Hydroelectric Plant

Search For Wanda

You can get them all at: http://unlimited.pyche.net/downloads.htm

March teasers:

Unfortunately, Elektra was postponed due to technical
issues. However, those issues will make her release in March that much sweeter.
Buyog discussed her, and mentioned an updated version of Savage Hulk to come in
March as well in this article:

Favorite
Fiction: Creator Interviews: Scruffy Dragon Production’s Buyog

Another anticipated character should be coming out in March
as well. Twinimage’s Nightcrawler. If you have not watched his video yet, make sure
you do so now.

After you watch it, I know you’ll say "Wow!" and start counting
the days until he is in your roster.

Mugen: Batgirl Update 03-01-09

You may remember the post I made a couple of months ago for version of Batgirl in mugen. I have since found another version of the character. Unfortunately, it's not the Cassandra version. Unfortunately, this version is not complete. But it does have a slightly different look and has the capability to throw batarangs! That is fun, I've got to admit. Mole's version is a little bit further along in terms of the needed sprites. I'm looking to see more of these versions as they become more complete.

Creater Interviews: Alexziq

Well, Volzzilla has done it again. He passed on to me an interview he did with Alexziq. I am really impressed with his work and I was grateful to him for setting aside time to answer Volzzilla's insightful questions. As always, Volzzilla's comments and questions are bolded and Alexziq is unbolded.

1) How did you first learn about MUGEN and how long ago was that?

Two years ago, I was looking for a copy of the fan film “Lobo’s Paramilitary X-Mas Special” I stumbled upon a MUGEN video of Lobo. I had seen screenshots years ago of a Lobo fighting game, and thought this was new footage. After reading, and doing more internet searches, I realized I would actually be able to play DC characters in a fighting game so I was ecstatic as a fan.

2) When you are just focusing on having fun and playing, what characters do you tend to use the most and why?

I actually like to play my Flash remix, and Mini Flash together on Team Arcade just because I have a mixed roster, and the characters have the means to beat just about anybody if you know how to play them. I’d say I enjoy Lobo as well because I was a big fan of Lobo in the 90’s.

3) What comic character not already made or in the process of being made do you wish was MUGENized?

Well a lot of people say “everything” is in production but that’s not always the case. I’d really like to see some more unique DC characters like Swamp Thing, Constantine, or The Creeper get made. It’s a real shame there’s not a decent Catwoman for MUGEN yet.

4) Can you please tell me about what current WIP you are most looking forward to other than your own?

As far as Wips go that I’m looking forward too, I’d say I’m really looking forward to the guys I’ve worked with in the past projects the most. Z666’s Havok, Batzarro’s Rhino, Dark Talbains Wolvenom, and Jason Todd’s Wonderman.

5) Please tell the readers all the characters you have worked on towards their release.

Joker (Jason Todd, and Batzarro) Coding, and some Sprite work

Harley Quinn (with Batzarro) Coding

The Flash Barry Allen, and Remix 3.0 (With Egoless, and Eradicator) Sprite improvement, recodes, and bug fixes

Robin (Jason Todd, and pretty much everyone formerly from Team Spoiler) Coding, bug fixed, and some sprite work

Hobgoblin (With Dark Talbain, and Susan Mugen) Fixed minor bugs for upcoming re-release)

Sniper Joe (with Spider Mew) recode, and bug hunt

Question (With Jason Todd) early beta

Shazam (With Jason Todd) terrible early alpha

Red Tornado (With Jason Todd) leaked terrible alpha

6) Which one of those stands out the most to you and why?

Robin, and Harley definitely. Harley a little more so just because she was my first attempt at coding from a base instead of editing, and fixing existing material. And Robin because it was the character that helped me learn how to add, and implement code.

7) Do you have any plans on further updates towards those characters?

Oh yeah. Robin, Joker, Harley, and Question are all on my agenda for re-release this year. Even if other versions get released, I plan on seeing them through till I’m happy with them from a personal standpoint.

8) What WIPs are you currently working on?

Batman Beyond and Red Tornado are my current projects. I inherited both these characters from more underground creators, Spiderbat (Batman Beyond) and Jhonny DC (Red-T), and I was able to get all the permissions for these to finish the work they started and hope to have playable beta’s by spring. I’m not a spriter so I have to rely on my co-workers to help me out on improvements because both of these have massive potential, and we don’t want to cut corners with these particular releases.

9) I’ve seen you sporting a banner in your signature about a new team you are involved in. Can you please share any information about them?

Well the Legion Mugen Team is: myself, Spidermew, and Z666. We were all Team Spoiler members before the split. I really wanted to help these guys get their stuff off the ground after Spoiler broke up. Jason, Batzarro, and Dark Talbain had all put out Betas that got a lot of attention, and all three branched out to work with other creators, and more experienced coders. I took an interest in Sniper Joe because I felt like the first beta was just slopped out there with a lot of problems, and I wanted to help Mew get it going because it was a solid Capcom character.

Like I said I’m not a spriter, so I need people to help me if I do need Sprite work done, and I knew these guys were still at a similar place in life as myself so it just worked out. In turn I promised these two guys I’d fix or code whatever they need as top priority. The Spoiler Team alumni are all still very close, so its not like much really changed. It just was a very intimate group of people who were comic fans first, who all kinda got into MUGEN through that avenue.

When we branched out to work with people outside of it, it just didn’t feel right. While I’m sure some probably roll their eyes at the break up knowing that we still work closely, at the same time I’ve never gotten along better with the group. I think without the pressure of a “Team” we all ended up a lot happier. I don’t expect that to make sense to most people, but it is what it is.

10) Any tips you would like to share on how you all work that may help other creators?

I’m still learning myself, but I recommend caffeine, Adult Swim, a good Laptop, and a lot of patience. At least as far as coding goes. I was oblivious to PC code before this, so it’s a learning experience.

11) Everyone knows that MUGEN creation is very detailed oriented and time consuming. What keeps you motivated to continue your work?

Hmm, good question. As a coder sometimes it’s the challenge, sometimes it’s the quality of the sprites. I got very challenged when I worked on Sniper Joe in January because it was a style of character I wasn’t used to. At first, I kept getting frustrated, but once I dug into it, I got obsessed with it. Now that I’m on Batman Beyond, I get to fix up all these great animations, and its so sharp looking that I can’t put down the laptop. I do think I need a break later this year, but it’s only to make more time for my writing, and music work that have been long neglected.

Thank you, Alexziq and Volzzilla for sharing this interview with the readers of this blog. The WIP that Alexziq is working on that I'm most excited about Batman Beyond so I can't wait to try it out. I love his Flash Remix and I'm sure we will like all the characters he has a hand in developing.
