Mugen: Punisher

I don't fully understand why Punisher is so popular. I prefer "old school" hero morals where no matter what happens, the hero chooses not to kill. To quote Spider-man from one of his comic books: "Nobody dies, it is a rule." I realize that many fans prefer darker and grittier characters, but I think Frank Castle, the Punisher, is insane....driven by his grief and desire for revenge. He's a monster, but considering all the evil in the world, he will never run out of opponents.

This character is complete I think! It's great. I really like it and I'm not a big Punisher fan, but the opportunity to fight with a really well-made character can't be ignored. One thing that surprised me about the gameplay was his symbiote mode. A symbiote like Venom's engulfs Frank Castle and makes him stronger. Then, when you disengage the symbiote, it attacks your opponent. It's an interesting idea and depicted well. I would have never thought of it. The other thing about this character is that it's only playable as part of Eternity of Heroes from Infinity Mugen Team. When this Punisher is available for individual download, I'd like to see how it does against the Unlimited's Dead Pool.

Mugen: Solid Snake

Solid Snake is the main character in the Metal Gear Solid video games. I've got to admit that this version is the best for mugen. It's got great moves. If I understand correctly, Sean Altly also adapted this version for mugen. You have punches, kicks, and as well as guns galore. You can download it at http://mugenguild.com/seanaltly/. Here is the video of the test at the following at the end.

I have to admit that this character is really fun to play with! If you are a fan of the Metal Gear Solid games, you will love the way this character was implemented. You can do just about everything Snake does in the games except sneaking around. My three favorite things are that you can use three of the same guns that he uses in the games; you can flip your opponent on their back, put C4 explosives on them, Snake turns away as the C4's explosion draws health off your opponent; and finally it is priceless when Snake hides in a cardboard box and enemy soldiers from his game shows up and shoots your opponent in a hail of bullets. You have got to download this one and check it out! Here is my video test:

Mugen: Sentry

Sentry is an interesting character. Some people attempt to write him off as another cheap Superman clone. But I think it is more that. It's interesting how Marvel introduces the character as a long lost Stan Lee/Jack Kirby collaboration and then writes him into the Marvel Universe as being there since the early days of the Avengers and the Fantastic Four and Spider-man and the X-men. However the world and Sentry himself forgot about him and his powers. In case you don't know about him, here is a run-down on his powers:

Superhuman strength, speed, stamina, agility, reflexes, senses, and durability
Light and radiation manipulation
Flight
Telepathy
Resurrection
Healing

His history is problematic because they played around with continuity a lot. Here are a couple of links for more information.

Although the Sentry character is not complete, it is sill really fun. It shows so much potential. Sentry should be powerful, like in Superman's class. And the character is well on it's way. I look forward to the character's single release so I can send it against Hannibal & Kal Elvis' Superman...Just to see what happens. I need to point out that sentry is not yet available for individual release. The only way to play with him is to download the Eternity of Heroes from Infinity Mugen Team. It's only a gigbyte zip file and well worth it!

Grudge Match: Snake Eyes vs Dead Pool

I wondered...who would win in a fight Dead pool or Snake Eyes? It turns out that several people have voiced their opinion on the Internet. In my opinion, I think Snake Eyes would win hands down. Snake Eyes is sane, but I think Dead Pool's madness w0uld prove to be a liability however his healing factor could make the battle long, but i think Snake Eyes' skills would prevail. Here is a fight I staged in Mugen.

Please Share Your Opinions

I've placed 2 polls on the right side bar. One is for Marvel Characters and the other is for DC. I'd like to know which characters you are excited to see in Mugen. Some of the characters I have listed are already WIPs and some are not. If you know of any released WIPs please share the information in comments. If there are characters that I have omitted that you believe should be on the polls please share in the comments. Thanks!

Mugen: Snake Eyes

It's been 25 years since I first heard of GI Joe. Yeah, I know, Hasbro claims the franchise goes back to the 12 inch dolls that was one guy and not a team. However I was 8 at the time the team concept started so I'll set my origin date that way. I liked all the characters, but Snake Eyes was my favorite. For a time, Snake Eyes was the most popular character because the the series focused on him and other Joe ninjas. I think he was also the most consistently depicted character across cartoons and comics: a highly skilled ninja, horrible physical scars, and voiceless due to the same accident that makes him hide his face. I have found only one version of him for mugen. It's found at the Infinitity Mugen Team website. Here is some comprehensive information.

Hulk Vs Review

Well I got the Hulk Vs DVD and I've got to admit that it was great! I loved it. They were great stand-alone stories. To be honest, I liked the Wolverine story better because I think Wolverine was captured perfectly as well as the Hulk. Wolverine took a huge beating but he gave as good as he got. I thought Thor was too wussy. He got his can kicked and handed back to him a lot more than I expected.

I found a link on the blog below that lists some of the Hulk's best battles against other Marvel characters.
Secret Wars on Infinite Earths: The Comic Book Fight Club

I believe that I would say that the Hulk won both battles on the DVD and he fought more than just Thor and Wolverine. He fought all of Weapon X and the army of Asgardians and beat all of them.

Mugen: Dead Pool

Dead pool has become a very popular character in the comic books. I don't know a whole lot about him. He has healing factor. He seems to be an excellent fighter. And oh, yeah, he is completely insane. I'm not sure if that is why he's popular or not but what I am sure about is that the Mugen character that the Unlimited team released December 25, 2007 is more than awesome. I like playing with it. It's fun and it has a lot of moves that fit with the character depicted in the comics. Dead Pool is supposed to be character with a major role in the upcoming Wolverine movie.

Here are some links with more information on Dead pool.

This character is so much fun! The intros, outtros, taunts and moves are very funny. I love the helper moves too. Seeing Cable is fun. And I think my favorite move is when Dead Pool attacks and uses swords and guns is fun to use. You can watch the video here:

Mugen: Psylocke

Psylocke, Betsy Braddock, is probably one of the most complex members of the X-Men. She started out as a proper British woman with a lot of telepathic abilities. At first I thought that she was really no different than Jean Grey. And then Marvel made an amazing change to her: She was captured, put into a sexy, Asian woman's body, and taught ninjitsu. Imagine: a telepathic ninja! This happened during my teenaged years and I could not think of 2 things more cool in a comic book character. She could focus her power to attack opponents with weapons made of psychic energy. Thankfully she exists for mugen and you can use these same powers.

Basically, both versions of the character seem the same to me: great! I thoroughly enjoyed playing with both of them. I think the AI for the WhiteMagic2002's may be a little better than the Infinity Mugen Team Version. Technically a mugen character is only as good as the player wielding it. If a human is using the Infinity version, I'm sure it is possible to beat WhiteMagic's version.

Here is the video tests I made:

Mugen:Rorschach

When Watchmen first came out, I was about 10 or 11 so I have not read it. With the new movie coming out in one month, I've decided to not read the comics or look up any information until after the film. It may be interesting going into the movie without a lot of knowledge of the world the movie takes place in. At the same, the story is seminal - influencing modern storytelling in fundamental ways. I don't know everything about Rorschach but I do know he is important to the story and I was overjoyed to see that Sean Altly decided to make him into a mugen character. Hopefully mugen version of other Watchmen characters will show up. It's a well-done character I enjoy using it. It was released 02/04/09 according the Mugen Guild forum. Also, Mr. Altly, has gone on record saying that he will release a patch to tweak Rorschach's AI so that he will be awesome when controlled by the computer. Here is a list his features quoted from Sean's post on the forum:

Rorschach's features:

-4 Intros
-Kovacs Cameo
-Archie Entrance
-Fridge Ambush
-Rorschach's Journal (features 2 randomly occurring voice clips)
-2 Win Poses
-Archie Exit (Be Seeing You)
-Rorschach's Journal (features 4 randomly occurring voice clips)
-5 Special Moves
-3 Super Moves
-1 Knockdown/Overhead
-Run/Run Jump
-Back Hop
-Negative Edge
-SHADEs-Style Chain Combos
-Launcher and SHADEs-Style Air Combos

Grudge Match: Spider-man vs Spider-man 2099

In the comics Spider-man and his future version only met once in the comic books. I enjoyed that story immensely and even own the real book. It was wonderful. They worked together and had a chance to walk...er websling and wall-crawl in each other's worlds. So this isn't really a grudge match...it is a sparing session.

Eternity of Heroes Review

I've already announced that Infinity Mugen Team has released a version of their game "Marvel vs Capcom: Eternity of Heroes". It's amazing. It's designed to come down as nearly single executable so it's not possible to take individual stages or characters and incorporate them in other games. There are 4 characters that have only been released in this game and this is the only way to play them: Punisher, Sentry, Wolvenom, and Captain Mar-Vell. In the coming weeks I will be doing a post for each one. In the meantime, I want to make a few general comments. I think the select screen is awesome. It's unique. I've never seen any select screen like this one. I like the music too. And it is much fun to use. I highly recommend people who want a good mugen game to download this one. They even did a great job keeping the size of the game relatively small. One gigabyte, zipped is pretty small considering what the game all contains. Also it should be easy enough to download for anyone on a broadband internet connection, which is most people.

Mugen: Rogue (Update-2)

Thanks to volzzilla, I now have those two versions of the Rogues, I had mentioned that I could not get. One was done by XCalibreBlade and the other by Big Eli King. I will pitt this version of Rogue against Splode's. XCalibreBlade's and Big Eli King's version uses the same color paletes as the Infinity Mugen Team version. The main difference between the three versions is that XCalibreBlade's and Big Eli King's can use a variety of other character's attacks. The list of possibilites is the same as Splode's but if you are not fighting any character from Splode's list (see first Rogue post) you can use a different character's special moves each time you kiss the other character. If you are fighting a character from that list, you can only use the powers of that character. Here is the list again so you can see it.

The characters and moves available are as follows:
* Cammy
SPECIAL: Cannon Drill
SUPER: Spin Drive Smasher
* Cyclops
SPECIAL: Optic Blast
SUPER: Mega Optic Blast
* Dhalsim
SPECIAL: Yoga Flame
SUPER: Yoga Inferno
* Juggernaut
SPECIAL: Earthquake
SUPER: Headcrush
* Ken
SPECIAL: Shoryuken
SUPER: Shoryureppa
* Magneto
SPECIAL: Hyper Grav
SUPER: Magnetic Shockwave
* Ryu
SPECIAL: Hadoken
SUPER: Shinkuu Hadoken
* Zangief
SPECIAL: Spinning Piledriver
SUPER: Final Atomic Buster
* Gouki/Akuma
SPECIAL: Zanko Hadoken (air fireball)
SUPER: Tenma Zankuu Hadou
EXTRA SUPER: Shun Goku Satsu (aka Raging Demon - Level 3 only)

Playing with either of these versions is fun. XCalibreBlade's version tends to a little easier when it comes to using other character's special moves. I see little difference between XCalibreBlade's and Big Eli King's version. I've got to face the fact that using Rogue to pull Capcom character moves is a treat. Here is the video that goes along with this post.

Mugen: Spider-man 2099

When I did my Spider-man in Mugen post, a got a couple of comments for links for Spider-man 2099. I did not include Spider-man 2099 in my Spider-man post because this version of Spider-man was not Peter Parker. His real name is Miguel O'hara.

Back in the early 1990's, Marvel started a line of comic book series that imagined several of their characters in a future time. All the books took place in the same universe, and had the same back drop. Spider-man was one of those characters. He had his own book written by one of my all-time favorite writers, Peter David. I loved everything about that series and I was sad when it was canceled. He had all of the first Spider-man's powers with a few tweaks. His web shooters were organic like they are in the Spider-man films and in the MTV television series. And Miguel had retractable talons, super strength, and agility. I loved the costume too. I loved the action, drama, supporting cast, and humor. It was excellent.

I don't know if anyone else watched it, but there was a series on television for Fox kids called Spider-man Unlimited (picture on the right). It wasn't well received because our Spider-man traveled to another earth where everything looked futuristic. The truth is I think it failed because they were trying to copy Batman Beyond but keep it about Peter Parker. They should have just made a Spider-man 2099 series and just adapted the comic. But no. Oh well, I guess they'll get it right one day.

I have heard that some group was putting together a Marvel 2099 project for Mugen. I'm not sure if the version of Spider-man 2099 is designed for that project or not. Here are some links for that project:

Playing with the character is great. The truth is it plays like a solid Spider-man character. The stances and moves look different but it's not something we haven't seen before. Still I recommend adding him to your mugen, especially if you are a fan.

Grudge Match: Ms Marvel vs Wonder Woman

LeeSyunghan has suggested pitting Ms Marvel against Wonder Woman. I thought that it was a great suggestion. To my knowledge it has never been done in the comics books so let's look at it now. In my opinion it's a tough call. But I think that Ms Marvel could beat Wonder Woman. I did find an image online where someone drew a cover for such a fight. by Eric Cruz. His site is at http://erick-cruz.webs.com/.
